Three signs you’re ready to evolve your strategic career

Once you reach a certain level in your career or business life, you are likely to fall within one of two categories. The first group includes professionals that are satisfied with the level they’re at for the foreseeable future. The second category are high-achievers who are constantly evolving their goals to be bigger and their strategies better and stronger. If you’re experiencing any of the following three signs in the workplace, chances are that you fall into the second category and you are ready to evolve your strategic career, or step into a more significant leadership position.

 

1. You’re less interested in the “doing” and more interested in the “why”

If you find yourself thinking more about the bigger picture for you or your team, and you are not satisfied with the “heads down” approach and simply finishing tasks. In fact, you’ve probably already mastered what you do, and you may find yourself questioning why things are done a particular way and trying new approaches and ideas. You’ve begun focusing your energy on working out how your department connects to the overall business and its ultimate goals or if you own your own business, you’re starting to free up more time to work on your business, not just in it.

TIP: Rather than trying to work out how to connect the dots on your own, start interacting with stakeholders from other departments to help build your knowledge and find opportunities for efficiencies and collaboration. 2.  You’re obsessing over your customers and competitors

You’re becoming increasingly interested in gaining insights and understanding your organisation’s customers, keeping up-to-date with your competitors and noting industry changes. By considering these bigger trends and issues, you’re broadening your understanding of what is needed to be successful and highlighting the relevant strengths and weaknesses within your department or your own business. This in turn helps you to better establish how the overall business can meet the needs of your sector and remain competitive.

TIP: Share any research or customer insights you’ve discovered with your team and start asking questions to work out how your department or small business can become better aligned with customers.

 

3. You’re envisaging new ways to do things

You know you’re heading for a strategic career when you’re spending more time envisaging how to help your business transform into the business it should be, not simply helping it continue to operate as it always has. You find you are paying attention to what’s happening in your organisation and in your industry and you’re starting to see ways that your team, division, or you personally, can either do more or better prioritise tasks and resources.

TIP: Organise a blue-sky brainstorm session with your team to look at where your company is now versus where it needs to be. Consider whether the ideas you come up with are possible and starting thinking about what success would look like and how it could be measured.
