The online MBA makes it a small world for Tim
“Living in London is in no way an obstacle for Tim Carter who has started an MBA at Griffith Business School.
“The great thing is it doesn’t feel even the slightest bit distant,” he says. “The content is stimulating, and lecturers deliver it in an engaging way that encourages participation.
Tim (34) started his MBA studies in mid-2014, taking subjects on economics and sustainability and systems thinking.
“I feel so connected with my lecturers and my MBA colleagues. Everything from lectures, reading materials, online discussions to group work all feels really natural. There is also a huge library of online resources available including access to journals, videos and all the course content.
“I work in a fully connected world and interact with people from all over the globe daily including Paris, Hamburg, New York, San Francisco and Bangalore. It’s really great to be part of an MBA program which operates in a fully digital global environment like my workplace does.”
After initially graduating from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Business (2002) and a Master of Marketing Management (2004), Tim departed the Gold Coast where he grew up to fashion a truly global career.
“I have been fortunate to travel the world with some great international companies. Some of the cities I have presented or worked in include Bangalore, Dubai, Geneva, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Montreal, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Milan, Munich, Leipzig, Dublin and Bucharest.”
The journey would take him to Electronic Arts in 2006 as a senior product manager launching games across the globe, and Yahoo! in 2009 where he was responsible for the execution of mobile strategy in Europe for four years. This involved monetisation of their mobile sites and apps.
In 2014 he was appointed Head of Strategy and Business Operations (Europe) for InMobi, the world’s largest independent global mobile ad network. Tim now manages a number of business functions and teams, and works with the world’s leading agencies, advertisers, publishers and app developers.
Senior roles and increased responsibility have come with Tim’s career progress, and as a new opportunity presented itself with InMobi, thoughts of an MBA crystallised for Tim. He decided the time had come to prepare for the business challenges awaiting his career.
“I work in the technology industry which is very exciting and provides a challenging environment to learn new things. I wanted to complement this industry experience with an MBA. I decided to undertake the Griffith MBA to provide me with the foundations to be a more effective future leader.”
Values and Purpose
The core values around which the Griffith MBA is built provided another decisive factor for Tim.
“It was offering more than an MBA, rather a program whereby I will gain an understanding of responsible leadership, sustainable business practices, and a global focus. Sustainability represents the next wave of innovation and the Griffith MBA will prepare me for this.
“Values and purpose are not necessarily the most obvious elements to consider when evaluating an MBA program. However, once I discovered the Griffith MBA and learnt more about it, it set the benchmark in how to evaluate other MBA programs.
“The choice was clear for me, the Griffith MBA stood out as the best MBA available to meet the needs of future business.
“It has already started to change my perspective on how I see the world around me. I hope in the coming years to discover more about myself. I am looking forward to making a meaningful contribution to business, society and this wonderful planet.”
Tim was also drawn to the flexibility of the program’s online delivery, which allows him to study in his own time.
“I have a demanding role at work and time is limited. The Griffith MBA offers me a lot of flexibility to do lectures, group sessions, readings and study.
“When I graduate I also aim to actively engage with Griffith through the ‘MBA for Life’. You can never stop learning, and having the resources available to keep me up to speed with the latest developments, especially in sustainability will be critical to my future.”
